BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- A former Bladen County Schools superintendent has avoided prison time and any penalty after pleading guilty to a crime.
According to the assistant district attorney handling the case, over the state's objection, Judge Douglas Sasser yesterday gave Killingsworth a prayer for judgment continued. A PJC is a request by a defendant to the court after a guilty plea not to enter a judgment. That means Killingsworth, who faced up to 10 months behind bars, will not receive a sentence for his crime.
Killingsworth was among a group of former public employees in Bladen County indicted by a grand jury for financial crimes in 2011 after a SBI investigation. Killingsworth was indicted for putting someone he was not married to as his spouse on his insurance and getting $4,021.92 in benefits.
During an October 2010 school board meeting, Killingsworth hand wrote a letter of resignation. He quit his job less than 18 months after starting.
A prosecutor said Killingsworth reportedly did more than 100 hours of community service between his plea and sentencing. He also had to pay court costs and paid all the money back when he left his job, so no restitution was ordered.
